A Birthday Party To Remember

I thought I’d finally share some images of NBC 4’s  Angie Goff’s son’s 3rd Birthday party. This took place at Busy Bees, one of my favorite places for little ones because it’s tailored just for little ones but also because they have amazing custom parties. If you have a theme in mind, my friend, Natalia will deliver! And when I say deliver, she will go above and beyond your expectations.  Exhibit A- Bob’s At The Bottom Of The Sea Party.  To see more images from this fun filled party you can visit Angie’s blog.

South Korea Meat Farm Dogs {Alexandria VA Photographer For AWLA}

This week,  with the help of Humane Society International,  The Animal Rescue League of Alexandria (AWLA) received 23 dogs from a South Korea meat farm.  I was part of the  AWLA team that documented this transfer.  They arrived at the shelter on Monday and Tuesday night where they received immediate care and evaluation. By Friday, most of the dogs began yet another journey to partnering shelters where they will be ready for adoption. You can find more of this story here. Here’s a little of what I captured. You can also view a video of these and other images on this Post by the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

Thip Khao {Washington DC Photographer}

Haven’t yet heard of Thip Khao restaurant by Chef Seng? It’s the new restaurant darling of Washington DC and it recently opened.  It’s getting rave reviews! You can view the Washington Post write up here and more here. This is the second restaurant for Chef Seng, who opened Bangkok Golden in Falls Church in  2010.  Not surprising,  Bankok Golden too has received equally great reviews as seen in the Washingtonian Magazine‘s  100 Very Best Restaurants of 2014.

Before Thip Khao’s grand opening, Chef Seng invited Monks from Wat Lao Buddavong to bless the new restaurant.  The private ceremony took place with a handful of invitees.  I’m not buddhist but I do believe in their positive message and teaching. During the event, there was chanting, offering, and a bracelet ceremony where the monks bless you and adorn you with a bracelet they’ve made and blessed.  Although I was there to work, I was able to receive a bracelet. I truly felt a spiritual connection. Buddhism comes from the work ‘budhi’ which mean awaken which is exactly how I felt after the experience. I feel so fortunate to have photographed such a beautiful and spiritual event.  Thank you Chef Seng and Thip Khao for allowing me to share your special day and for sharing your delicious food.

Lovey Sessions {Alexandria VA Child and Family Photographer}

On this Valentines Day, I thought I’d share some photos from our Lovey Session Event at Old City Press in Old Town Alexandria.   Lisa from Mud Stew Photography & Design LLC and I had so much fun capturing these little ones and their special loves. The special Lovey bond is fleeting so we’re happy to capture this time for Parents as well as the children who hold their friends so dear.   To the parents who joined us, we hope these photographs bring a smile to your face at every glance. They sure did bring a smile to ours. And to the children who delighted us, may you always have an open heart and beautiful friendships. For more images, you can view The 5 Project video.

Lovey Session {Alexandria Va Child Photographer}

For The 5 Project’s 1st event of  2014 we will be offering Lovey Sessions at the Old City Press January 31-February 2, just in time for Valentin’s Day.

What exactly is a Lovey Session? Let’s start off with the word ‘lovey’.   In my household, when our our children were babies/toddlers, lovey is what we called their well beloved stuffed animal or blankie.  You know, the one they sleep with, eat with,  travel with, talk to, and hold near and dear when things are just not going according to plan. My daughter received a beautiful pink cat as a present when she was a baby and it was love at first sight.  She took her lovey with her on her first day or daycare. There were still tears but her lovey was there to comfort her and she couldn’t go to daycare without it.  My son also has a Lovey that he’s had since birth. Although he is really into Mine Craft and all things digital these days, I’ll still find his lovey on his bed.

The photographers of The 5 Project all have the same lovey experience with their children and so we thought what better way to preserve this childhood bond and this very sweet stage by photographing this special time.

So in short, a Lovey Session will be our attempt at freezing time, keeping those chubby hands and feet small a little while longer, preserving the innocence and  unabashed joy over the little things.

A Lovey Session will will include your little one and their own special lovey. The location will be at the gorgeous Old City Press & Comapany in Old Town Alexandria- right across the street from 5 Guys! It’s a gorgeous space filled with natural light.

This session will completely center around your child and their lovey.  We’ll have a warm up period for your child with a fun activity and then they’re off to their 30 minute session.

For more information about this event, please visit The 5 Project.

Evening Photographs {Alexandria Va Family Photographer}

Evening photography comes to life without the use of flash such as the ones I’m sharing with you here. Next time you find yourself with what you think is minimal lighting from the warmth of a bonfire or 4th of July fireworks, turn your flash off and play around with your camera. If you have a DSLR, the secret is keeping a wide aperture, increasing your ISO and staying really still, not allowing any camera shake.  Bring your tripod and creativity out to play. You’ll be amazed at what you can capture!

bonfireblogwb

I  though I’d share some my photos from a recent trip to Buttler’s Orchard in Maryland with some of my very special friends (who all happen to be photographers) and our families.  At Buttler’s you can reserve a private picnic area complete with bonfire and tractor-driven hay rides around the farm. We started off with photos, of course. Lots of photos! After we got that out of our system we roasted hotdogs and had a pleasant dinner.  We were fortunate enough to have a beautiful clear fall evening with the harvest moon cresting as we enjoyed our evening hayride.  We ended our evening huddled around the bonfire enjoying our  s’mores.  It was truly a magical night enjoyed by all of us.

IMG_7799_0055 copy 2

And to drive the point that you don’t need a flash, here are photos from the 4th of July.  This is all 100% available light-no flash.  As you can see, fireworks and sparklers provide enough illumination to capture your kids, provided they’re close enough to the light source. You may get some grain, but it really adds realness and texture to the photograph and if you’re taking photos of family, that’s exactly what you’re capturing.  Happy shooting!

Super Heroes Do Exist {Alexandria Va Event Photographer}

And they are everywhere. You may not even know it but you could be standing next to one at the park, the grocery store, or even in the elevator. They come in all shapes, sizes, religions, race-they’re a diverse bunch. These heroes I speak of have all seen and experienced one of the scariest monsters that plague our world today and have conquered it. I am privileged to know one of these fearless warriors- my brave friend, Addy. She may not have bulging muscles, nor can she fly around the world in 5 minutes flat, heck she’s barely 4 ft. tall, but she’s every bit a super hero as Superman. Addy has fought off enemy number 1! We know this evil attacker as Cancer. Yes, at 5 years old Addy has beat cancer into submission with sheer determination, bravery, and inner strength. She is now cancer free and is a happy girl in kindergarten and she is pretty AMAZING. I was honored to be one of the photographer’s (along with Mud Stew Photography & Design, LLC.) at Addy’s party recently, aptly dubbed Addypalooza. Here are photos captured of such a magical day and a video I created for her family to always remember such a carefree and fun day with dear friends and loved ones.
