The Purple Goose {Alexandria Va Photographer}

At the end of the last year I had the opportunity to do a photo shoot at The Purple Goose,  Alexandria’s premier children’s clothing store, located in the heart of Del Ray, Alexandria Va.   If you live in Alexandria, I’m sure you’ve been in the store.   The staff is extremely friendly. All. The. Time! I go there because not only do they have clothes you can’t find anywhere else but for their great customer service and always lively conversation with staff.  By luck one day I was chatting with Linda, one of the owners, and discovered that their photographer had moved out of town. And talk about being at the right place at the right time, we ended up coming together to create the first ever Purple Goose Holiday Collection series. As you can see from the images below, they had the most amazing holiday dresses for little girls with the frills and the texture and matching jackets, we just had show them off! Those of you with little girls can relate to my oohs and ahhs, and I may have squealed at the pink frilly numbers. But I digress. Today I wanted to share even more Purple Goose good news!  I am the official photographer for The Purple Goose and we’re teaming up for a pretty spectacular spring project. We are looking to you, Purple Goose fans, to help us create our first on-line Purple Goose Magazine.  The magazine will be a look book for spring and summer wear as well as articles from local vendors.  We need models;  1 to 12 years old to showcase the spring and summer clothing lines.   What better models than The Purple Goose fans!  If you’d like to enter your child in our model search here are the details:

  • “LIKE”  The Purple Goose and Gena Roma Photography’s Facebook page if you haven’t already:)
  • Message Gena Roma Photography requesting to be entered into The Purple Goose Model Search with a photo of your child, their name,  age, and clothing and shoe size.
  • Photoshoot will take place on Sunday, February 22nd. Please enter only if you are available all day on the 22nd.  The shoot will take place in store, and some outdoor.
  • All entries must be submitted by February 19th 5:00 pm
  • In-house judging of all photos shared will take place on the 20th
  • Winners will be announced via  Facebook on the 20th and will be contacted by Gena Roma Photography.
  • Winners will be showcased in the inaugural issue of The Purple Goose magazine!
    • receive 1/2 off on your in-store purchase
    • receive an 8×10 photo from the shoot

Thip Khao {Washington DC Photographer}

Haven’t yet heard of Thip Khao restaurant by Chef Seng? It’s the new restaurant darling of Washington DC and it recently opened.  It’s getting rave reviews! You can view the Washington Post write up here and more here. This is the second restaurant for Chef Seng, who opened Bangkok Golden in Falls Church in  2010.  Not surprising,  Bankok Golden too has received equally great reviews as seen in the Washingtonian Magazine‘s  100 Very Best Restaurants of 2014.

Before Thip Khao’s grand opening, Chef Seng invited Monks from Wat Lao Buddavong to bless the new restaurant.  The private ceremony took place with a handful of invitees.  I’m not buddhist but I do believe in their positive message and teaching. During the event, there was chanting, offering, and a bracelet ceremony where the monks bless you and adorn you with a bracelet they’ve made and blessed.  Although I was there to work, I was able to receive a bracelet. I truly felt a spiritual connection. Buddhism comes from the work ‘budhi’ which mean awaken which is exactly how I felt after the experience. I feel so fortunate to have photographed such a beautiful and spiritual event.  Thank you Chef Seng and Thip Khao for allowing me to share your special day and for sharing your delicious food.

Food Love {Alexandria Va Foodie Photographer}

One of my first sessions in studio was a foodie one with this beautiful lady. This is Miemo from Miemonster Chronicles. She’s a local food blogger who I met by chance at one of my favorite Old Town Alexandria coffee shops.  Above being a smart , creative, and driven, she can cook! In celebration of fall, she prepared one of my fall favorites, butternut squash soup and the pièce de résistance, pumpkin creme brûlée.  Now, she doesn’t claim to be a chef but  her blog and the  passion for the culinary world she exudes makes you believe otherwise.  Her blog doesn’t stop at just food, there’s a great mix of her everyday life with her doting husband and her faithful and very adorable fur baby, Bawse. Whether it’s traveling, seeking new restaurants, cooking, or eating, Miemo is a great example of someone who truly enjoys everything life has to offer.  At the end our the session we sat down and savored her delicious dishes. I still have dreams about that hearty soup.   The food was fantastic, my company even more so with a joie de vivre that is so infectious! I can get used to being a foodie photographer:)

Stand out in a sea of selfies {Alexandria Va Photographer}

Solo portrait sessions are increasing in popularity due to the social media culture today. Never before have your portraits been so visible to so many.  Your face is stamped on all your social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. For some, your profile pic is even on your email.   For business owners or entrepreneurs, the pictures on your website really becomes part of your brand.  Today, your customers have googled you and your company before stepping foot in your store or office. This then makes your website, including your profile picture, your client’s first impression.  Make it a good one.  Whether you want photographs for personal or business reasons, make sure you seek a professional to help you stand out in a sea of selfies!

The 5 Project {Alexandria Va Children’s Photographer}

I am very excited to announce a very important collaboration! Over a year ago, a group of women photographers in the area and I, started a monthly gathering. Just the 5 of us geeking out over our passion for photography.  We shared ideas, discussed styles, critiqued work, and went on magical photography excursions with our kids together.  I have learned so much from these women and not just skills on a technical level but I learned so much about myself. These women not only inspire me, but they continue to push me to become a better photographer, a better parent, a stronger person and they’ve become a very solid support system.

Throughout the year, we had a chance to work together so it was a very natural progression to start working on bigger projects, which led to the creation of The 5 Project.  The 5 Project will take on larger jobs that Gena Roma Photography can’t handle on it’s own such as large scale events, weddings, preschool portraits, and community projects.

We have an upcoming project with Old City Press & Co. in Old Town Alexandria. I have a big announcement on this event on Wednesday so stay tuned!

Meanwhile, feast your eyes on Old City Press & Co.’s space.  They are a letterpress printing company and design studio. Stop by to purchase paper goods or better yet, join one of their letterpress workshops. Visit them for more information!

Mother, Author, and Inspiration

A few months ago I had the pleasure of photographing Allison Brennan.  If you love romantic thrillers, then you’re familiar with this New York Times and USA Today Best-seller. Allison has authored over 20 novels and short stories. Yes, that’s over 20 and she continues to write more! I met her at a quaint and sunny bookstore, Time Tested Books. It was a cold day with the early morning sunlight streaming through the windows. Beautiful light, exposed bricks, wood shelves, and the charming reading nooks made this an ideal location and I felt as if I was in a storybook setting.   Allison’s arrival to her success is also somewhat of a grand story to me-one of those feel good movies.

I always seem to take away a little something from people I photograph and meet along the way and that’s one of the reasons why I love my job.  Allison is such an inspiration for me, as a woman, a mother and a small business owner.  She is one of those I’ve met along the way who will stay with me. You see, not too long ago Allison had a full time job but had dreams to write a novel.  At first, she wrote when she could- early mornings and after the kids were in bed. She was able to juggle family, work, and writing but with obstacles, feelings of uncertainty, and stress. Thankfully, she continued on her path to follow her dreams without compromising what’s truly important to her, family life.  Working moms often have this inner dialogue on whether or not we’re providing enough of ourselves to produce a thriving career and a happy and healthy family environment.  A balance between the two is really difficult to achieve so when I come across women who have succeeded in creating a happy home and work life, I take notice and feel hopeful that this inner struggle we women have sometimes can be peacefully resolved. Bravo, Allison!
